Hocking Hills, OH

July 23, 2012

July 22nd – Canoed 7 miles on the Hocking River from the town of Rockbridge to Logan Ohio

After about a mile, we stopped to take a short hike to Ohio’s largest natural rock bridge in Rockbridge State Nature Preserve.

Stayed the night in a large cabin (Ironweed) rented from Cedar Falls Inn.  We received a gift card from Peter & Heather last Christmas which covered the cost of the cabin, an excellent dinner at the Inn and breakfast.

July 23rd – Drove a short distance to the Cedar Falls trail head and hiked down a half mile to the falls before breakfast.  There have been near drought conditions, so very little water was coming over the cliff.

This was the healthy part of our breakfast!

Hocking Hills State Park has six units.  We had visited Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave and Cedar Falls previously so we decided to hike in the other three park units.  We started with an enjoyable two mile (round trip) leisurely hike to the falls (dry) at the end of Conkles Hollow.

We next drove to the Rock House unit which has the only true cave in Hocking Hills State Park.  The loop trail was about a mile with several sections of stone stairs.  The cave itself was quite impressive with seven window-like openings that allowed light inside.

Our last unit was the Cantwell Cliffs.  They are said to be the least visited but perhaps the most beautiful of the parks attractions.  They are about 150 feet high and made up of three different types of limestone.  We did both the Cliffs Trail and the Gorge Trail covering about 2.5 miles.  The Cliffs Trail had many vistas with lots of ups and downs whereas the Gorge Trail was, for the most part, flat along a creek.

This is called the “Fat Woman’s Squeeze,” obviously, Helen did not have a problem!
